Organic Feminine Hygiene

Choosing a monthly hygiene product is a very personal matter. You want to feel confident while feeling comfortable. No doubt you have seen TV commercials and magazine adverts for new, “state-of-the-art” sanitary protection promising ultra absorbency, tampons you can change in the dark, and even panty liners that are dyed black so they don’t show up in the disco. Amazing! Yet have you ever considered the impact that some of these products may have on your body and the environment? Go on, keep reading...

Spirit Of Nature and Natracare

We have chosen to carry the natracare range, which was created in 1989 by founder Susie Hewson out of concern for the damaging effects of dioxin pollution on women’s health and the environment. We believe it to be the most effective and comprehensive range of natural sanitary products for women.

Natracare produce 100% pure organic cotton tampons and natural chemical free pads that are guaranteed:

  • Free from chemical additives
  • free from plastics
  • free from GMO-cotton
  • chlorine-free
  • dioxin-free
  • biodegradable – thus greatly reducing the amount of waste produced and overall environmental impact
  • made from natural materials
  • made from wood pulp from managed forests

Why choose natural pads?

For each monthly cycle it makes sense to choose a pad that is made from natural materials. Many gynaecologists have advised women with sensitive skin to use natracare pads to reduce their contact with chlorine-bleached materials, and also products containing synthetics and superabsorbents made from petrochemicals. –meaning you don’t feel so “hot and sweaty” and odours are kept to a minimum. Furthermore, because they are biodegradable, they are not of such great concern to the environment as conventional pads.

Natracare pads are guaranteed:

  • made from over 95% biodegradable natural materials
  • non-chlorine bleached
  • free from optical whiteners and perfumes
  • extra soft cover

Why choose natural tampons?

We recommend the use of natracare organic tampons because not only are they made from 100% natural fibres they are certified:

  • 100% organic cotton
  • certified by the Soil Association
  • totally chlorine free and dioxin free
  • free from surfactants and finishing agents

Why is dioxin so harmful?

Dioxin is a family of toxins produced through various natural and industrial processes. It builds up cumulatively in the body over time, right from the moment we are born. A large amount of the world’s dioxins is created during the manufacture of certain chlorinated products such as paper pulp which is used in the production of tampons and sanitary pads. Thus conventional sanitary products unnecessarily expose women to low levels of these dioxins every time they use them.

Why is the cotton in conventional tampons harmful?

Non-organic cotton is grown using vast amounts of pesticides and other harmful chemicals. These toxins can never be fully washed out of the fibres, meaning any residual toxins come into direct contact with your body – internally! Furthermore, conventional tampons also often contain synthetic materials which are non-biodegradable and potentially harmful for your body.

Toxic Shock Syndrome – don’t give it a chance

Toxic Shoc Syndrome is a type of blood poisoning that will make you feel severely ill very quickly. It is a rare, but potentially life-threatening condition that can occur in anyone – men, women and children. Toxic Shoc Syndrome is caused by the common bacteria Staphylococcus aureus – which normally live harmlessly on the skin and in the nose, armpit, groin or vagina of one in every three people. In rare cases certain strains of these bacteria can produce toxins (poisons) that cause Toxic Shoc Syndrome.

Anyone can get Toxic Shock Syndrome but half the reported cases are associated with women who use tampons.

What are the symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome

The symptoms are much like those of severe flu - i.e. sudden high fever, vomiting, sunburn-like rash, diarhoea, fainting or feeling faint, muscle aches, dizziness, confusion. However – if diagnosed early it can be successfully treated. If you suffer from any of the above symptoms and/or are in any doubt, please seek professional medical advice as soon as possible.

Tampon use and Toxic Shoc Syndrome

Menstrual Toxic Shoc Syndrome has been linked to the use of super-absorbent tampons and tampons that contain synthetics. For this reason it is important:

  • to use pure organic cotton tampons
  • always use a tampon with the lowest absorbency suitable for your period flow
  • use a sanitary towel or panty liner from time to time during your period

Other helpful tips on tampon use are:

  • wash your hands before and after inserting a tampon
  • change tampons regularly, as often as directed on the pack
  • never insert more than one tampon at a time
  • when using at night, insert a fresh tampon before going to bed and remove it on waking
  • remove a tampon at the end of a period

Dioxin and Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows in other areas of the body, typically the pelvic region, the ovaries or the intestines. This tissue, which would normally leave the body during menstruation, accumulates and causes heavy menstrual cramps and frequently infertility. The exact cause is still unclear. However a study carried out in 1999 suggested a strong link between the exposure to dioxin and the development of endometriosis. Tests revealed that women suffering from the complaint had high levels of dioxin in their body.

Natural Feminine Hygiene – is it worth paying more?

Perhaps you have read negative reports about organic food. Sceptics will claim that it’s a whole load of "mumbo-jumbo" and just an excuse to "rip-off" the consumer with higher prices. The fact that you are reading this suggests that you don’t fully believe what the sceptics say. Natural and organic feminine hygiene products are a little more expensive than cheap, mass-produced conventional monthly hygiene products.

However, we believe it is a small price to pay for natural, good quality feminine hygiene products which has been made with our health and the environment in mind. In the organic industry, there are no huge mark-ups. How many multi-millionaire organic farmers, manufacturers or even retailers have you seen? Surely that is the proof.

Nothing is for free and you always get what you pay or don’t pay for... so, if you buy "super cheap" feminine hygiene product bargains you might pay the difference with your health!

Spirit Of Nature – keeping costs low

We try our very best to keep our prices as low as possible by working with modern, efficient technology in our warehouse and offices. We try to source products from Europe, keeping transportation costs low and promoting inner-European trade. To keep cost low we shoot our own photos, design our catalogues and website. Although we have to invest a lot of our own time we feel it is well worth the effort for our customers and environment.
