Nappy systems - choosing the right system for your baby

Choosing the right nappies for your baby often seems be one of the hardest decisions to make! When I had my first baby 9 years ago, I was completely confused by the mind-boggling array of washable nappy systems available and felt defeated before I had even begun. Nine years later the market is swamped by companies supplying washable nappies. Did no-one mention that you needed a phD in "Nappiology" these days?

So here it is….. our definitive guide to "Nappiology"

First things first: Washable or Disposable Nappies?

Now, this in itself is a tough one! Many parents would love to choose washable nappies for financial or ecological (or both) reasons, but on considering the practicalities of it all, it just doesn’t seem to be an option (e.g. parents work and baby at nursery, no room to dry nappies, no local nappy laundering service). There seems to be a great deal of pressure on parents these days to use Real Nappies to cut down on the vast amount of waste.

Don’t be driven by guilt!
Naturally, there is a limit to the amount of waste this planet can accommodate! However, please don’t be "driven" to using washables just because "ecologically it’s the done thing". Consider your lifestyle and your current situation – if using washable nappies is going to make your life with a newborn or young baby more stressful, then maybe it isn’t the right option for you (please also read what the Environment Agency thinks about this ...).

Whatever you choose, though, it makes sense to choose a nappy that is as natural and as biodegradable as possible.

Tip: Many of our customers use a mixture of washables and disposables. Eco disposables are also an excellent choice for the first few days in hospital after your baby’s birth or when you go on holiday and don’t have the facilities to wash nappies.

Spirit Of Nature Eco-Disposables – kinder to the skin and the environment
Although there is no doubt that natural, unbleached and 100% breathable cloth nappies are the best option for young babies, the plain and simple fact is that there is an extremely high demand for disposable nappies because most mothers simply do not have the time to wash nappies.

At Spirit Of Nature we offer you the perfect compromise: All the features, without the guilt! We carry two brands of eco-disposables which have been tested by reputable certification bodies and certified "eco-friendly".

Washable Nappies – why use them?

  • Financial benefits
By buying washables, you will be saving hundreds of pounds that would have been spent on
disposables from birth to potty training. (approx. £600 per baby)
  • Ecological benefits
By using washable cloth nappies, you are creating a great deal less waste – which, in the case
of conventional disposables, takes hundreds of years to biodegrade
  • Better for baby’s skin
Your baby’s skin is 5 times thinner than your own and the continuous exposure to moisture
can easily lead to skin irritations and rashes. Therefore it is very important that the humidity
can escape from the nappy. Cloth nappies are more breathable than disposables.

There are so many companies offering washable nappies, what makes Spirit Of Nature nappies different?

Our washable nappy systems are made with 100% organic cotton and 100% pure virgin wool! Did you know that conventionally grown cotton is the most heavily sprayed crop in the world? The toxic chemicals and pesticides used in the growing process and chlorine bleach used to make conventional nappies a beautiful crisp white colour cannot be completely washed out of the nappies. These toxic residues can be absorbed by your baby’s sensitive skin.

Therefore only the softest, purest, organic cotton should be allowed to come into contact with your baby’s skin.

Our organic washable nappy systems are:
  • certified free from harmful toxic residues – therefore there is less risk of allergies or nappy rash occurring
Cotton products are made from 100% unbleached organic cotton.
Woollen overpants are made from pure, unbleached virgin wool.
Waterproof overpants are breathable and machine washable.
Silk liners are made from pure, unbleached, naturally healing mulberry silk.
  • made from extremely soft and breathable natural fibres which allow the air to circulate, thus again reducing the risk of nappy rash.
    Cotton – is naturally absorbent
Outer wraps (wool, microfibre) are breathable and draw the moisture in the nappy away from the skin
  • biodegradable – the cotton, wool and silk components completely biodegrade – therefore leaving zero environmental impact
  • easy as 1, 2, 3……
